Harlem Toile Cushion

Cushion using Sheila Bridges Harlem Toile fabric.  Look closely at designs on the toile fabric - these are not the traditional pastoral scenes of England or France commonly associated with this traditional 18th century design, "Toile du Jouy". This is the Harlem Toile, the now iconic reworking of toile by African American designer Sheila Bridges.

There are six scenes expressed in Harlem Toile, all of which celebrate or gently lampoon stereotypes of both traditional and modern African-American life. This is another example of a beautiful twisting of traditional Western art forms to art which celebrates Black stories. Predating and going further than Netflix’s Bridgerton in its centring of the Black experience, these delicately drawn designs tell new stories of 18th century life and invite intriguing new possibilities.
