Welcome to the Cornrow

The Cornrow is a home and lifestyle edit dedicated to celebrating the modern Black aesthetic. We create and source lifestyle and homeware products that are vibrant and affordable, showcasing design and books that celebrate African and Black diaspora heritage for everyone to enjoy.

We hunt for unique products and contemporary designs from around the world, from African and Caribbean inspired styles to Black British and African American designs too. We're also proud to stock an amazing curation of must-read books by Black authors from across the diaspora for all readers young and old.

Inspired by their dual African and Caribbean background, The Cornrow was created by sisters Kemi and Lara. In the same way that we've taken our name from a hairstyle so closely tied to Afro-Caribbean traditions, our founders see The Cornrow as a love letter to their heritage.

Why Choose The Cornrow

A Family-Owned Business

The Cornrow was created by sisters Kemi and Lara, and it's a real family affair. Their mother, Yasmin, runs the gift wrapping service and provides creative advice, while Yasmin's partner Jonathan, formerly part of Chelsea Design Centre, also provides guidance.

Celebrating Black Joy

So much of the conversation about the Black Experience focuses on suffering and survival. We think that Black Joy is important too, so we want to highlight and celebrate it in the decor, furniture, art, clothes, jewellery and books we curate.

African Made

We support African artisans and businesses which are often overlooked, underpaid and working with challenging constraints. If you're looking for expertly crafted African gifts that fairly support the producers and makers, The Cornrow has a great selection for you.

Championing Black-Owned Businesses

As a Black-owned business ourselves, we think it's important to support other businesses that are owned predominantly by a Black person. Institutional racism has held us all back, so it's important to do what we can to support Black-owned businesses today.

Emphasising Eco-Friendly Products

Sustainability is one of our core priorities, so we've gone out of our way to stock products that are sustainably sourced and help you live a more eco-conscious life. We're proud to stock products like the Tiwani Heritage hair extension recycling bag, allowing you to recycle synthetic hair extensions so you can enjoy your hairstyle without feeling guilt.

Contemporary Design and Aesthetics

Our favourite homewares and interior design looks take inspiration from Afro Aristo meets Caribbean Nan Chic - just check out our Pinterest boards! Our edits are shaped by our African and Caribbean heritage, connecting us with our ancestors as well as contemporary designers and creators.

Oshun Energy

As Black women, we look to Oshun, the West African deity who looks after femininity, love and sensuality. She inspires us to own our space and style, embrace our sensuality and control our destinies - the ethos that The Cornrow was founded on.

The Bookshop

We have proudly curated a stock of books by contemporary Black authors like Angie Thomas, Colson Whitehead, Bernadine Evaristo and David Olusoga, as well as classic novels by authors like Andrea Levy. From novels to memoirs, we've chosen books that reflect the contemporary Black Experience. Add them to your reading list or give them as gifts to friends and children - we know you'll love them.

Lovingly Gift Wrapped

You can get your items gift wrapped in our beautiful wrapping paper with eye-catching African-inspired designs. Perfect for presents or just treating yourself - that's self-love!
