Lady Congo Art Print
This is a wonderfully detailed portrait of a beautiful lady reclining in a sumptuous chair. The style of this portrait subverts the 19th century paintings of aristocratic and wealthy ladies painted by society artists such as John Singer Sargent and Whistler. Our print takes John Singer Sargent's famous painting of Lady Agnew and puts a Black woman in her place.
There are two versions available - the original and a version with an injection of humour with the words "Up to no good" framed behind her.
We think this portrait celebrates the important lost stories of aristocratic Black 19th century women, such Lady Sarah Forbes Bonetta, Queen Victoria's goddaughter and her daughter Victoria Randle.
We have called her Lady Congo, taken from the poem 'Ego Tripping' by Nikki Giovanni. She will elevate your space with her beauty and regalness.

The artist is the American artist Caitlin Rain. Caitlin has requested we donate her share of the profits from each sale to 'The Black Curriculum' charity https://theblackcurriculum.com.

She is beautiful! I chose the portrait without the tag "Up to no good". I am so pleased to find a Black woman portrayed in this manner, a classical portrait--she can be seen as a conjured ancestor, how a woman of her time might be imagined to have lived, if we had always been treated with respect in the western past; if we had always been permitted to just live our lives and take advantage of the opportunities that normally would have been available. Love it!
I was so pleased with my artwork, communication and delivery was speedy and professional, and the packaging and branding was great.
